The paulownia tree is considered sacred and noble in Chinese tradition, as it is said to be the tree upon which the mythical phoenix rests, symbolizing auspicious signs of peace and prosperity.

Paulownia is also known for its rapid growth. In the past, it was customary in Japan to plant a paulownia tree when a girl was born, and to later craft a chest from its wood when she married. For this reason, it carries meanings of healthy growth and the prosperity of the family.

The radiant hexagonal (kikkō) pattern is a symbol of longevity and prosperity, while the repeating diamond shapes extending in all directions represent the flourishing of future generations and good health.
